Thabaphaswa Mountain Sanctuary - Adventure sports, Accommodation and Camping on a working farm in Mokopane, Limpopo Province, South Africa

Sheltered by enclosing hills, in a natural basin, lies a wonderful bushveld retreat and overnight stop, Thabaphaswa Mountain Sanctuary in Mokopane, Limpopo Province, the are the ideal overnight stopover for travellers to and from the North.

"Thabaphaswa", in the local dialect, means "the mountain of the black and white bull" - a well-known landmark to the inhabitants and tribes in the area. It describes the coloured patterns of the indigenous Nguni cattle. The Thabaphaswa mountain towers over the adjacent hills.

The network of hiking, mountain biking and 4 X 4 trails, offers the ideal opportunity for nature lovers to discover the variety of game, bird and plant life of the area. The beautiful scenery is complemented by the design of the overnight camps which are camouflaged between the big boulders on the farm and blend into the mountain landscape...

Accommodation

Thabaphaswa provides a wide range of accommodation but our camps are especially popular.

The unique Dome Rock Camp is situated next to a non-perennial dam and has "glass-walled" units that blend into the surrounding environment. These are situated amongst huge boulders which afford guests both privacy and the experience of being close to nature whilst still enjoying the home comforts of a bed and thick mattress.

The Kanniedood Camp is a triple storey, reed-enclosed stilt shelter built amongst Commiphora (Kanniedood) trees high up on a steep rock face. The cantilevering upper deck offers incredible views over the hills and valley below. The first deck contains bunk beds and mattresses with sleeping place for 14 people. The space between the stilts forms an open air kitchen next to a communal braai area.

Once again ablution facilities (one shower and one toilet) are open air with reed fencing. Access to the camp can only be achieved by 4x4 followed by a short, steep climb carrying food and luggage. There is no fridge therefore it is advisable to bring your own good quality cooler box. A braai grid, pots, pans, a kettle, two-plate gas stove and solar lamps are provided. Bring your own cooking and eating utensils.

Fig Tree Camp accommodation caters for groups of up to 16 people on 8 bunk beds with thick mattresses. It consists of a lockable reed shelter with a corrugated iron roof adjacent to a communal braai area. Basic kitchen equipment is provided but there is no fridge. Bring your own cooking and eating utensils. Ablution facilities (two reed enclosed showers and 2 toilets) are situated approximately 50m away at the Thabaphaswa campsite.

The Pump House is a charming, thatch, fully self-contained cottage/honeymoon suite situated next to the cattle kraal. An antique, brass double bed (linen provided), freestanding Victorian bathtub, candles and solar lamps provide the perfect setting in which to enjoy nature. It was designed as accommodation for honeymoon couples. We have tried to make The Pump House as accessible and convenient as possible for guests in wheelchairs.

Camping - We have 9 different " in the bush campsites". Each can accommodate 2/3 trailers and or tents.

The Pickled Pig Cottage on a neighbouring farm is a cottage, 2km by road from the Thabaphaswa main gate. Guests staying in this cottage will have full use of all the trails and facilities of Thabaphaswa Mountain Sanctuary. The cottage is private, near, but well screened from the other two houses on a working 600 ha livestock farm.
